Anne Remmel has loved writing stories since childhood. She won her first writing contest in Grade Eight in a school-wide essay competition. In High School at Lawrence Park Collegiate in Toronto, she edited Robur, the yearbook. In her professional career, she published in the Canadian Occupational Therapy Journal. Her academic career includes a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a dissertation in which she explored trust and leadership.
Recently she has turned her story-telling skills to crafting the exciting story of her dual identity. Two Worlds Within is a memoir covering her life in the Estonian diaspora community in Toronto. Her reflections on childhood in a refugee, immigrant family, lead to an ongoing struggle with living in two cultures. Her journey of internal struggles covers decades in which she abandoned her roots, assimilated into Canadian culture, and lost touch with her heritage. The death of her parents begins the long journey to recover her family history, her heritage, and her dual identity.
This compelling story of identity formation, assimilation, and heritage recovery speaks to some of the most pressing social issues today. Millions of people are displaced by war or economic pressures, torn from their homelands and faced with life in two cultures, their heritage and their newly adopted land. Her writing is engaging, deeply personal, and yet universal. Three chapters of this book first appeared in the Estonian press in Canada, in the Estonian Life newspaper. Hot off the press, Two Worlds Within is now available in paperback and e-book platforms.
